About Software
Tor Browser is a free, open-source web browser designed to provide anonymised internet browsing and access to the decentralised “Dark Web” (onion routing network). Developed and maintained by the US-registered non-profit organisation The Tor Project, it is built on top of Modified Firefox ESR code to mask user identity and network traffic.
Core Architecture
- Onion Routing: Your data is wrapped in multiple layers of encryption like an onion.
- Three-Hop Circuit: Traffic passes through three random servers (relays) called the Entry, Middle, and Exit nodes.
- IP Masking: Websites you visit see only the IP address of the final Exit Node, hiding your real location.
- Layered Encryption: Each relay decrypts only enough information to know where to send the data next.
Key Privacy Features
- Tracker Blocking: Isolates each website you visit to prevent third-party cookies from following you.
- Anti-Fingerprinting: Makes all Tor users look identical in browser fingerprint to prevent device tracking.
- No Cache Retention: Clears all cookies, browsing history, and form data automatically when closed.
- Censorship Circumvention: Bypasses regional firewalls by using specialized connection tools called Tor Bridges.
